DeckLink SDI 4K vs Mini Recorder 4K for Nobe OmniScope

Hi,

I’m trying to choose between the Blackmagic DeckLink SDI 4K and the Mini Recorder 4K for a dedicated Nobe OmniScope setup, and I wanted to check if I’m overlooking anything important.

Current signal chain:

DeckLink (SDI OUT)
→ Micro Converter SDI-to-HDMI 12G
→ SDI LOOP OUT
→ Capture Card (SDI IN)
→ Nobe OmniScope

My everyday workflow is mostly SDR, so the main goal is simply getting a clean, stable, and accurate SDI feed into OmniScope. HDR support would just be a nice bonus for occasional use.

A secondary bonus would also be having SDI output available for occasional monitoring.

From what I’ve found so far:

  • Both cards seem similar for standard 6G-SDI UHD capture.
  • The Mini Recorder 4K specifically lists Rec.2020 and HDR metadata support.
  • The DeckLink SDI 4K specs only mention Rec.601/709.
I also confirmed that the DeckLink SDI 4K can capture and output at the same time in Resolve/Desktop Video, which makes the extra 80€ easier to justify since the Mini Recorder 4K is input-only.


What I’m mainly trying to understand is whether there’s any practical reason to choose one over the other for a mostly SDR OmniScope workflow.

A few things I’m wondering:

  • Are there any noticeable differences in stability, latency, driver behavior, or compatibility with software like OmniScope?
  • Is one card generally considered more reliable for long-term monitoring/scopes use?
  • Does the DeckLink SDI 4K still correctly pass Rec.2020/HDR metadata even if the specs don’t mention it?
  • Has anyone compared these two directly in SDR or occasional HDR workflows?
Part of my hesitation comes from reports about the Mini Monitor 4K sometimes incorrectly switching from BT.2020 back to BT.709 in HDR workflows until rebooting or changing projects. So I’m not fully sure how reliable metadata handling is on Blackmagic’s lower-end DeckLink cards in practice.


Right now I’m leaning toward the DeckLink SDI 4K because of the simultaneous input/output support, unless there’s a strong reason the Mini Recorder 4K would be the better choice even for mostly SDR use.
 
They should be virtually identical. If it were me, I wouldn't sweat it, but I would reboot before doing a P3/ST2184 / 1000-nit pass of an existing Rec709/2.4/100-nit project.
 
i have one of each in seperate rooms, no diffrence in my real world
i have no need for the card to switch anything
I manualy swtich presets in Nobe when changeing input
 
sorry, never tried, had the card in a Flame that was used for tvc's, so only 709 in play, when we decommisioned that, i re-used the machine whole and complete to run scopes, nothing is attached to the output currently

there were early issues switching with the Mini4k, that was solved with a driver update, same driver for the Decklink4k, might work, but might not

They were, but note they're only HD. They're still available used on eBay. I got along with a Mini-Monitor card for 4-5 years when I first started working as an independent colorist in 2010 (after 30 years of being a staff colorist for LA post houses).
 
There is also a 4K version, and they still have them. It's just hidden from the main "Capture and Playback" page, you have to dig, just click in any Declkink card with SDI and they all show up. I missed that.
