LGG Resolve feature requests thread

I think Blackmagic's staff is pretty busy and might miss this thread here. A better idea might be to put your feature requests in the dedicated category on Blackmagic's own forum:

Blackmagic Resolve Feature Requests
https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewforum.php?f=33

I find this forum has a high percentage of people who do grading as their main job, not editing/vfx/youtube videos etc. I've seen so many quality of life level features being suggested on this forum over the years that I think those are worth collecting in one place. There's a lot of features that wouldn't create any "THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING" content on youtube, but would save so much time over say, 10 year career it's not even funny.

I'm just saying there's no guarantee that Blackmagic Design will see it here. It'll have more of an impact on the manufacturer's own forum. They absolutely do keep an eye on a half-dozen internet forums -- it's interesting when product manager @Peter Chamberlain unexpectedly pops up here and there.

BMD gets a lot of input from very high-level colorists all over the world, and it's amazing how many changes Resolve has been through in the last 13 years. They may not always react quickly, but I think it's a question of how they use their resources and dev team to simultaneously develop new features, fix old bugs, and then add user requests over time. At NAB, you can often actually find one of their staff programmers or support people at the booth and they'll actually tell you, "yeah, we looked at that feature, but here's a good reason why we can't do it." So sometimes the situation is more complicated than it might seem from a distance.

Just for laughs, here's where we were with Resolve 6 some time ago (2009)...

I started with Resolve 8 and have fond memories of that interface.
Doh, I started with Resolve 7 and it was a kludge. But I was coming from daVinci 2K, and had to get used to the idea of an integrated color-corrector and an image playback source. I had 2 days of training and then immediately got thrown into supervised sessions with trailer people and then a complex reality show -- it was quite an adventure (2010).

Did you ever use the (much earlier) Resolve, R300? I test-drove it over at Technique in Burbank in 2007-2008, and it was a nightmare -- agonizingly slow. But the daVinci Systems engineers assured us, "Resolve will get a lot faster once the CPUs and GPUs improve." And they were 100% right.

Not getting tired of asking for it:
"Consolidate Timelines" function.
I want to be able to consolidate timelines into one single render timeline, combining overlapping clips into one "best length", throwing away timewarps and being able to sort the timeline.

There has been lots of talk of getting more subtractive colour models in other threads, and just in case the stars align and someone reads this, I suggest that BM give the option for using alternative Colour Models in the normal control panels (e.g. HSV) so that all the controls on the standard controls and control surfaces (e.g. Saturation, WB, etc) all use the specified colour model.

I would love to render using the timeline name and add a suffix. I hate re-typing the timeline name in custom name just so I can add a "v1" especially for projects with lots of timelines with complicated names.

I would also love to be able to adjust timeline nodes when clips are filtered or sorted.

I am repeatedly frustrated that I cannot paste into the filename in the browser window on OSX, which is commonly available in other applications. My workflow normally involves having the same name for the timeline, the export folder, and the name of the export or stills. Re-typing the same thing over and over again is so frustrating when it's likely that Resolve calls the "Save As" file browser from the OS and either calls the wrong one or calls it with some un-necessarily restrictive options.

I agree, that is a really frustrating problem, and it bothers me as well.

A proper working colour density/luma control.

is it any possible to view the OFX settings below just where you have the Curves/Power window/HSL etc settings. So you don’t have to squeeze the nodes area?

This has been bothering me for a long time: When selecting a node with a Power Window, the window outline doesn't always appear when selecting the Window tab (=where you adjust window properties). I have to go back and forth to the Tracker tab to make it appear. This is not consistent - sometimes it appears when opening the Window tab but sometimes not. Frustrating..

That is an incredibly frustrating problem, and we've asked for a fix for years and years. I believe the same issue exists in Windows and Linux as well.

In sidefx Houdini you can copy and paste parameters out of individual nodes and link them to controls on a null node which can house all of your key controls. Would be awesome to do something similar in resolve- saves lots of time. As an example you could have your raw exposure parameters, your noise reduction, ofx parameters all in one node to alter quickly- you could link all of these parameters across multiple shots with user definable sliders. Hope that makes some sense

A global on-off switch for certain OFX/plugins. For example, it would be great to be able to turn on-off Neat Video globally for all nodes. And for Resolve NR that would also be great.

I know it's relatively easy to do in a fixed node structure, with always having the NR in the same node.. but still it would be great to have a simple global on-off switch.

I noticed now when bringing mono audio stems into the media bin for 5.1 for example, the 6 audio tracks are being brought as one 5.1 multi-track file. I need the opposite, and I have no idea how to set it up for that. This wasn't the behavior in the past, so I assume it is a new feature implemented recently.
