Micro Converter BiDriectional SDI/HDMI 12G LUT function

I've posted this on blackmagic forum and I still have no idea what the source of the problem is. I've recently purchased micro converter bidirectional SDI/HDMI 12g. The monitor is getting signal from hdmi out from the sdi port on converter and converter get the signal from decklink 4k mini sdi port. I've calibrated monitor using calman software and uploaded 3D lut to the converter, but it generate delta error that is worse than pre calibration state. If I uploaded to Video Monitor Output in Resolve, then monitor is in almost perfect state , less than 1 delta error. Is Lut function in micro convert working, or am I missing something? I'd greatly appreciate for any input on it.
 
You probably need to scale the lut to legal range
Thanks, stuart, for the information. I've used lattice's "scale full to legal levels" function for the rescale, but result was not improved. I've noticed that when I upload lut, legal or full, to the converter, there is a prominent blue shift with obvious lifted black. I wonder conversion from sdi to hdmi has anything to do with it.
 
Did you changed the converter setting From full range to video range cause i was having the same problem and my setup was similar to yours sending sdi out from ultrastudio mini 4k to the converter then hdmi out from the converter to the monitor and after trying several calibration 3D Luts with Calman i managed to get it work correctly make sure to set the converter to full range not video range and confirm that your display receiving RGB Signal.

Hi, Ahmed Thanks for your input. I've tried it but it didn't alter the result at all. I've tried it with resolve monitor output set to Full as well as Video, but in both cases, converter setting , either in video or full, didn't do anything.

Hmmm What lut format did you generated from Calman? I did Teranex mini 33x33.
 
Hey Evan, please can you share the serials (even just the first 4 or 5 digits) of the affected units and the serial of the working replacement converter?

The replacement unit is having a same issue. I've talked with blackmagic for the replacement through email but they don't want to replace.

Why they don't want to replace it? Maybe they're about to issue a firmware update which solves this issue? Or what else could be?

Hi John,

The DeckLink Mini Monitor 4K has a 12G HDMI output (2160p30 RGB max) and an 6G SDI output (1080p60 RGB max).

When you tick from Resolve the SDI 444, it will send RGB signal from both ports (2160p HDMI and 1080p SDI)

When you have unticked the SDI 444, it will send YCbCr 4:2:2 (less chroma) 2160p from both ports.

The best connectivity option for your setup is to use only HDMI cables; the Bi-Converter is working in RGB while you use HDMI in - HDMI out.

When you use SDI <-> HDMI with Bi-Converter, its works in YCbCr 4:2:2.
 
I would look at a scaling issue. Your signal levels are legal and if the bidirectional box operates the same as the others then you need to scale the lut. I'm not sure Calman can do this. It's the reason you cannot use Calman with the CG247X with legal levels where the lut needs to be scaled.

Hi Ted, now that's interesting. In the tech sheets of the converter I can't find anything about RGB/444. HDMI to HDMI in RGB with LUT would be wonderful. Are you absolutely sure about that? If yes I will buy one of these bidirectional converters right now....

The specs talk about what is happening with signal conversion connections.

No regular person will buy that product to use HDMI to HDMI, but it works as I said and have verified with special patterns which indicate chroma sampling issue (no issues), and verified with signal analyzers also.

Its supports 2160p30 RGB 10-bit max.

Looks like a more or less cheap usb powered LUT Box solution for me, right? (even if not regular person :)))

It's no available other solution with HDMI 2.0 in-out and 33-Point 3D LUT table for 10-bit RGB, at any price range.

Hi Ted,

Seems like I can now revive my Dreamcolor LP2480zx with 'BM Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 12G' as a LUT box for calibration using only HDMI in and HDMI Out!

The actual chain would be:

Intensity Pro 4K HDMI Out (RGB 4:4:4) > BiConverter 12G HDMI In > LUT (for calibration) > BiConverter 12G HDMI Out (RGB 4:4:4) > Dreamcolor.

Please say this is right.
