Primers colour management: transformation, optimisation, unification

We've established that Primers will land the image values for 709/2.4.
With no other colour management or special tweaks needed.

Due to "display referred" gospel mutated over a number of evangelists adding doom & gloom icing,
many are mislead that this necessarily means they are loosing something or somehow getting inferior imagery.

We've seen on multiple examples what is happening with the imagery in various routes.
Here in the upper examples we can see where the colour range ends up once in linear.

"Display referred": Distinctions

PROBLEMS in case of:

- 709/video profiles baked in camera - lost DR & saturation range, reduced processing precision
- Auto-conversions by the software at input - limited range & workflow, who knows what image response
- Applied in the start of grading process - limited range & workflow

NO PROBLEMS in case of:

- RAW or Log/wide gamut & Primers camera colour management designed for specific sensor response, containing full DR and gamut
- Applied at the end *

ADVANTAGES with Primers camera colour management

- Minimised workflow complexity
- Minimised image processing steps
- Minimised processing errors and image deterioration
- Normalised basis for conversion to HDR
- Usability everywhere
- Most realistic/natural scene depiction and quality of DoP connection to camera capture
- Will propagate best exposure calls at capture
- Will get the most out of the camera
- In post full focus left for creative work
- Reduced need for NR
- Superior imaging results

* - some processes work best after image has been normalised, like desaturation

Primers for Panasonic cameras have been updated to Gen10.

Cameras currently supported:

- VariCam
- EVA1
- Panasonic S Series - shot in internal V-Log V-Gamut
- Panasonic S Series - PRR
- GH6
- GH5S
- GH5

Examples show a lot of properties, in some:

- definition, detail
- "clarity"
- dimensionality, depth, volume

Primers for ZCAM cameras have been updated to Gen9.

Cameras currently supported:

- E2/E2M4 shooting internal Z-Log2
- F6 shooting internal Z-Log2
- F6/F6 Pro shooting ProresRAW with V-Log, V-Gamut basis

Clicking on F6 PRR set has few more examples, one of which is posted above.

New updates won't be neccessary.

Back when ARRI Alexa came out and became a standard, in films where it was mixed with film I could often pick the film from digital, even when overall look and palette were matched. There was always something not quite there with digital.

It took me a while to understand what was happening. It became obvious full potential of digital cameras was not utilised in the standard way of processing their imagery. It took some years to understand why and it took more years to learn and develop a route which takes things to...another level.
And you finally get to see.

Handling full capture range of the camera properly is an immense challenge.

Example comparisons posted on the page with camera maker's LUTs, RCM and ACES show a lot.

Primers for Alexa 35, latest tweaks.

3K crops linked.

Alexa 35, further tweaked.

Desktop screen grab side by side with ARRI LUT.

Multiple things to see here.
Some are jumping out even here, for some will be needed linked 1:1 and original texture unaffected by downscaling.

Final tweaks. Mini LF

Primer and ARRI LUT. Which is which...should be clear by now

This scaled image texture is garbage and colour feel misleading > 1:1 on the link, compare full size and wait for 10 sec on each

Another thing - on full screen look between the eyes and hop view from left and right images and you can see couple of things happening with the face.

I've seen some talks online about Alexa 35 with some negative assumptions about its colour performance.

They are wrong.

People often forget that they are perceiving camera recordings through some display output transform.
Getting the best performance out of a camera is...challenging. And with this log, gamut and all the range to manage it takes...quite a bit more to get there.
Luckily, some specialise in this.

I'm not posting final results here with ARRI test image, those snips before were work in progress and things all over the place during stages.

But just to clear this out...

Primers for RED have evolved.

Last RED related post was "further updates are unnecessary".

Further updates for RED got from unnecessary to...unlikely.

Still not online, few more tests and checkups and tweaks if needed.

Btw...

No "gamut compression" here.

Different paradigm.

Paradigm with "reference gamut compression":

In the opening post I wrote that this thread is likely to induce some head scratching.
